Soviet Political Prisoners, August 1977 (46.23-2)

<<No 46 : 15 August 1977>>

A List of Political Prisoners known to the Relief Fund

PREFACE (46.23-1)

*

The list gives details of 250 political prisoners and 25 political exiles.

The surnames of the prisoners and exiles are listed in Russian alphabetical order:

A, B, V, G, D, E, Z (or Zh), K, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, T, U, F, Kh, Ts, Ch, Sh, Shch, Yu (or Ju), Ya.

So is the spelling of each surname.

The headings in each entry (up to eight) are:

[1] Surname, first name, patronymic;

[2] The prisoner’s or exile’s place of detention, preceded by “held in”, for which the following abbreviations are used [197 prisoners] — any other addresses are given in full:

  • Vladimir Prison (600020, Vladimir, penal institution OD-l/st. 2) [29 prisoners].

[Mordovian Camps: 63 prisoners]

  • Mordovia 1-6 (431120, Mordovian ASSR, Zubovo-Polyansky district, settlement Sosnovka, penal institution ZhKh-385/1-6) [12 prisoners].
  • Mordovia 3-3, also 3-4 and 3-5 (431200, Mordovian ASSR, Tengushevo district, settlement Barashevo, penal institution ZhKh-385/ 3-3 also 3-4, 3-5) [14 prisoners].
  • Mordovia 19 (431170, Mordovian ASSR, Zubovo-Polyansky district, settlement Umorsky (the same place as Lesnoi), penal institution ZhKh-385/19) [37 prisoners].

[Perm Camps: 105 prisoners]

  • Perm 35 (618810, Perm Region, Chusovoi district, settlement Vsesvyatskaya, penal institution VS-389/35) [34 prisoners].
  • Perm 36 (618263, Perm Region, Chusovoi district, settlement Kuchino, penal institution VS-389/36) [52 prisoners].
  • Perm 37 (618801, Perm Region, Chusovoi district, Polovinka station, penal institution VS-389/37) [19 prisoners].

For letters from abroad, the addresses of the “penal institutions” [uchr.] listed above are as follows: Vladimir Prison: Moscow, penal institution 5110/I-OD; Mordovia (all camp zones): Moscow, penal institution 5110/I-ZhKh; Perm (all camp zones): Moscow, penal institution 5110/I-VS.

[3] Year and date of birth, preceded by “b. (age)” [200 known].

When these are unknown, the approximate age is sometimes given;

[4] The Article of the RSFSR Criminal Code under which the prisoner was sentenced, preceded by “Article”. In some cases, we give not the Article, but a short summary of the case (e.g., when the sentence was passed according to the old, pre-1960 Criminal Code), also when the sentence formally derived from a criminal charge, but the real reason was political. In the latter case, this is sometimes noted.

(Articles of the Criminal Code in other Union Republics have been “translated” into the corresponding Articles of the RSFSR Criminal Code) [Articles 64 (74), 70 (87) & 190 (15); plus criminal charges (9) and UPA-OUN (19)].

[5] The sentence and type of regime.

If during a term of imprisonment, the sentence was increased due to new charges, the total term of detention is given. If the regime has been changed, then the reference is to the regime the prisoner is under at present.

[There were forty odd “Twenty-Fivers”, serving 25 and more years; 185 were held under strict regime, 28 under special regime];

[6] end of sentence (the full term, including exile), preceded by “Due for release”.

It is easy to deduce the end of a camp term without a term of exile, by counting back the required number of years. When the length of sentence is unknown (particularly in the case of people under pre-trial investigation) the date of arrest is sometimes given in this column.

[7] details of relatives, preceded by “Relative”:

address, family numbers, age of children, and so on [118 known; 23 location only]; and

[8] state of health — only serious illnesses are mentioned, preceded by “Serious health condition” [23 cases, excluding Alexander Ginzburg].

Where there are no known details, the corresponding places have been left blank and will be filled in as we receive the necessary additional facts.

(N.B. A number of additions and corrections were made to the following list by Kronid Lyubarsky after his emigration to reflect the changes in the “second edition” of the samizdat list, which he helped to compile.)

*

[More information about many named below may be obtained from the comprehensive list of prisoners in Perm Camps 35 & 36 published by the Chronicle in December 1974: their numbers in such lists are included in square brackets, e.g., ABANKIN [26]: held in Perm 36.

The August 1977 list permits an analysis of the way in which the formality of these individuals’ detention and release was subverted by the arbitrary, lawless manner documented in their trials and imprisonment, see “Captivity and Release, An Analysis (1977-1982)”. Links to subsequent reports of releases and new prosecutions have been added here.]
