Article 190

of the Russian SFSR Criminal Code

(added to the Code in 1966; Article 190)

190-1: DISSEMINATION OF FABRICATIONS KNOWN TO BE FALSE, WHICH DEFAME THE SOVIET POLITICAL AND SOCIAL SYSTEM

“The systematic dissemination by word of mouth of deliberate fabrications which defame the Soviet political and social system, or the manufacture or dissemination in written, printed or other form of works of the same content,

“shall be punished

  • by deprivation of freedom for a term not exceeding three years, OR
  • by corrective labour for a term not exceeding one year, OR
  • by a fine not exceeding 100 rubles.”

190-1 – Deliberate fabrications, slandering the Soviet political and social system.

190-2 – Violation of the State Emblem or Flag (e.g., CCE 14.5, Liepin and Misudovich).

190-3 – Group activities disturbing public order (e.g., CCE 4.1, August 1968 Red Square demonstration).

These crimes are investigated by the MVD (police) and the procurator’s office. Those sentenced to imprisonment served their time in ordinary camps for those guilty of criminal offences.
