THE “CHRONICLE” IN ENGLISH

The first eleven issues of A Chronicle of Current Events, were published in 1972 as Uncensored Russia, a collection edited and translated by Peter Reddaway. The book was dedicated “to the editors of the Chronicle, whose identities are unknown to me”.

The subsequent four issues, 12-15, were translated but never published until now. They are included here.

English versions of individual issues, translated and published by Amnesty International, began to appear in April 1971.  Issues 17-64 are available here and on the Amnesty International website. (The list and date of publication in the West is given in four posts on this website: CCE in English, Issues 1-15, 1968-1970; CCE in English, Issues 16-31, 1970-1974, NA; CCE in English, Issues 32-47, 1974-1977; CCE in English, Issues 48-65, 1978-1982, NA.)

 Amnesty International

When copies of the Chronicle of Current Events first began to reach the West they attracted attention from many different groups. Among them were the researchers and activists of Amnesty International, founded in 1961, seven years before.

Amnesty began to share the contents of the Chronicle with a much wider audience from April 1971 onwards, by translating the successive issues and publishing them in English.
