2. GUIDED SEARCH

REPUBLICS & CITIES, GENDER, ABBREVIATIONS

Two hundred names of places, people, publications and organisations are shown in the “Guided Search” (Tag Cloud) in the right-hand column of this page. It is one equivalent of an “Index” in a printed edition (but see Name Index with over 500 names).

TIP — The periodical names are at the top of the list; after that comes the alphabetically-ordered list of surnames, place names and names of organisations.

[1] Soviet Republics and Cities

(see also Maps)

The described events mostly took place in the USSR in seven of its 15 constituent Union Republics, e.g. Ukraine (1969-1982). Certain Autonomous Republics (ASSR) within the various Union Republics, e.g. Yakut ASSR in the RSFSR, are also mentioned many times.

For ease of identification in the Tag Cloud major Republican or Regional Cities are written in upper case letters, e.g. RIGA.

Otherwise smaller urban settlements (towns) are distinguished from cities by the size of their population, whether at that time they had more or less than 50,000 inhabitants.

[2] Gender

To avoid the uncertainty caused by the great variety of surname forms, female first names are always given, e.g. Chukovskaya Lydia*. Male names are indicated by one initial or, if clearer identification is needed, e.g. Kovalyov I.S.*, the first letter of the patronymic is also given.
